History
Usuki Station opened on 1 December 1986 as a Japanese National Railways stop on the Ibusuki Makurazaki Line, initially unstaffed. With the 1 April 1987 privatisation the station passed to JR Kyushu. Platform length was extended from 90 m to 120 m in March 1990 in line with a timetable revision, and the station became staffed on 18 March 2006. SUGOCA service began on 1 December 2012. On 30 May 2020 the station was returned to unstaffed status after the Smart Support Station remote-assistance system "ANSWER" was introduced; remote staff handle most passenger queries today.
