History

Kami-shioya Station is a Kagoshima City Tram Tanyama Line tram stop in Higashi-Tanyama 1-chōme, Kagoshima, serving Route 1. It was opened on 1 December 1912 under Kagoshima Electric Tramway and transferred to the Kagoshima City Electric Bureau (today the Kagoshima City Transportation Bureau) on 1 July 1928. The stop has two opposed side platforms at-grade, with an adjacent grade crossing allowing riders to cross between platforms when a tram is not passing. Because it sits one stop before the Tanyama terminus, only the up-bound (Kōrimoto-direction) platform has a roof. Both platforms have approach indicators and announcements. Standard wheelchairs are accepted but powered chairs are not, because the platform width is below regulation.

Notes

Because Kami-shioya is one stop short of the line's southern terminus at Tanyama — and southbound passengers will be alighting at Tanyama just a minute later — the down-bound (Tanyama-direction) platform has no roof, while the up-bound platform does; this asymmetric provision is a deliberate cost-saving by the Transportation Bureau.
