History

Kiire Station opened on 20 May 1934 as the new southern terminus of the Japanese Government Railways' then Ibusuki Line, extended south from its previous terminus at Goino. It became a through-station on 19 December 1934 when the track was further extended to Ibusuki. The route was renamed the Ibusuki Makurazaki Line on 31 October 1963, and the station passed to JR Kyushu on 1 April 1987 with the privatisation of JNR. The station building, originally from 1934, was renovated on 31 August 1986 with a Western-style appearance and a decorative water-wheel motif on the roof. SUGOCA IC cards became usable from 1 December 2012, and the station was destaffed on 30 May 2020.

Notes

Because the station name is written with the characters for "joy" and "enter", the staffed-era ticket office issued vermilion-stamped "good fortune" commemorative platform tickets used as new-year and exam talismans.
