History
Satsuma-Itashiki Station, in the Itashiki-Minami neighbourhood of Makurazaki, opened on 31 October 1963 as part of the southern extension of the JNR Ibusuki Line to Makurazaki, the day the renamed Ibusuki Makurazaki Line came into being. It was unstaffed from the start and handled passengers only. At privatisation on 1 April 1987 the stop transferred to JR Kyushu, which has operated it ever since. The single side platform without a station building remains in service today; ridership leans heavily on students of nearby Kagoshima Prefectural Kagoshima Fisheries High School, whose centenary in 2009 was marked by a gate-style monument placed in the station forecourt.
