History

Satsuma-Shioya Station opened on 31 October 1963 in the Shioya district of Chiran-chō, now part of Minamikyūshū, as one of the stops added the day the JNR Ibusuki Line was extended to Makurazaki and renamed the Ibusuki Makurazaki Line. It began life unstaffed and passenger-only and has never had a station building. The site was designed so that a passing loop could be installed later if traffic warranted, but the second track was eventually deadheaded to serve only as a siding for maintenance equipment. Control of the stop transferred to JR Kyushu on 1 April 1987 at the privatisation of Japanese National Railways.
