History

Ishimine opened on 1 October 2019 in Shuri-Ishimine 2-chōme, Naha, as an elevated station on the Okinawa Urban Monorail (Yui Rail), built as part of the Shuri-to-Tedako-Uranishi extension; its station number is 16. The tramway-business licence covering the extension, which included Ishimine under a provisional name, was approved on 26 January 2012, and a ground-breaking ceremony was held on 2 November 2013. The formal name was set as Ishimine on 26 December 2014, and from 10 March 2020 nationally interoperable IC cards such as Suica became usable alongside the local OKICA card. The station is the easternmost on the Naha city section of the line.

Notes

The in-car chime played as trains pull into Ishimine is an arrangement of the Okinawan folk song 'Chon-chon Kijimunaa'.
