History

Saku Station opened on 1922-11-08 as a general station, when the Ministry of Railways completed the Teshio Line section between Otoineppu and Yoteppi (today's Teshio-Nakagawa). The line was renamed Teshio South, then Teshio, before being merged into the Sōya Main Line on 1930-04-01. Freight handling ended in 1982, parcels in 1984, and ticket staff were withdrawn on 1984-11-10; the introduction of CTC signalling in 1986 removed the last operating staff. After the 1987 privatisation, JR Hokkaido demolished the old building in 1990 and Nakagawa Town opened a replacement in 1991 incorporating the Saku Furusato Densho-kan local-heritage hall. From April 2021 the town has maintained the station.

Notes

The current building doubles as the Saku Furusato Densho-kan heritage hall, displaying a painting of the former station, an ammonite fossil found locally, and pictures of horse-drawn sleighs.
