History

Nayoro Station opened on 3 September 1903 as the terminus of the Hokkaido Government Railway Teshio Line from Shibetsu. The line was pushed on to Onneppu on 3 November 1911, making Nayoro a through-station. It became a junction for the Nayoro Line on 20 October 1919 and for the Mau Line on 10 November 1937. The current second-generation building dates from 1 November 1927 and was renovated in December 2018. Operation passed to JR Hokkaido and JR Freight at the 1 April 1987 privatisation. The Nayoro Main Line closed in May 1989, the Senmei Line in September 1995, and rail freight in September 1996; goods now move by truck through the Nayoro Off-Rail Station.

Notes

Nayoro is the northernmost off-rail freight depot in the JR Freight network: since the abolition of through freight trains in 1996 all rail cargo for the area moves by truck to and from Kita-Asahikawa Station, five round trips per day.
