History

Shibetsu Station opened on 5 August 1900 as the terminus of the Hokkaido Government Railway Teshio Line when it was extended from Wassamu, and became a through station three years later when the line continued north toward Nayoro. The line later took the names Sōya Line and then Sōya Main Line, and in 1949 came under Japanese National Railways. The current reinforced-concrete station building dates from 1966. At the 1 April 1987 JNR break-up the station passed to JR Hokkaido, where it remains a staffed station with a Midori no Madoguchi ticket window. It is the principal station for the city of Shibetsu and is served by every limited express on the line.

Notes

Shibetsu is the hometown of manga artist Shin Takahashi, and the station appears repeatedly in his work 'Saikano' (Saishū Heiki Kanojo).
