History

Memambetsu Station opened on 5 October 1912 when the Ministry of Railways' Abashiri Line was extended from Nokkeushi (now Kitami) to Abashiri; the surveyed route had run west of Lake Abashiri but local petitioning shifted it east through what is now Ōzora Town. The site was chosen on higher ground to avoid the flood-prone Hongō flats. The line was renamed the Abashiri Main Line in 1923 and the Sekihoku Main Line in 1961. It became a limited-express stop in October 1981, lost its freight and parcel duties in 1984, and was inherited by JR Hokkaido in 1987. A new building shared with the town library opened on 18 November 1990, and full demanning followed on 1 June 1993.

Notes

The current station shares its building with the Ōzora Town Memambetsu Library; when the library closes for the night, the waiting room is also locked and travellers use an outdoor passage along the side of the building.
