History
Shiretoko-Shari Station opened on 10 November 1925 as Shari Station, a general station on what is now the Senmō Main Line. A 1937 fire destroyed the original wooden building. It served as the junction for the Konpoku Line from 10 November 1957 until that line's closure on 1 December 1970. Operation passed to JR Hokkaido at the 1 April 1987 privatisation; freight and parcels had ended on 1 February 1984. After a 1997 campaign by local tourism interests, the station was renamed Shiretoko-Shari on 11 April 1998, with the community covering the costs. In December 2007 the building was enlarged and integrated with the town's tourist centre, designed by Hiroshi Kawahito in laminated Karamatsu pine.
