History
Itoshino Station opened on 1986-11-01 as a JNR provisional halt (rinji-jōkōjō) on the Sekihoku Main Line at Sanku, Tanno-chō, Kitami, handling passengers only and unstaffed from the start. At the 1987-04-01 privatisation the halt was promoted to a full station under JR Hokkaido. In April 2004 the platform was lengthened, ending the door-cut arrangement that had previously been used on some scheduled trains. It remains an unstaffed station managed from Kitami, with a log-cabin waiting room; the Rapid Kitami service also stops here.

Notes
The name Itoshino was chosen by a public competition organised by the then town of Tanno, expressing the wish that the town should always remain a place of love; the provisional name during planning was 'Koizumi'.
