History
Kita-Biei Station opened on 25 March 1958 as a Japanese National Railways stop on the Furano Line between Chiyogaoka and Biei, one of several new halts added after diesel-multiple-unit services began on the route in 1957. Construction was partly financed by the town of Biei, which contributed 181,000 yen, with further support from local beneficiaries. The stop has always been unstaffed and is served by passengers only. At the 1 April 1987 privatisation of Japanese National Railways the station passed to JR Hokkaido. It remains a single-platform halt sitting in farmland and forest near the confluence of the Bepetsu and Ubakubetsu rivers, with only local trains stopping; some northbound services pass through without calling.

Notes
The hamlet name "Ubakubetsu" comes from Ainu "u-pak-pet," "river of equal length," reflecting that the Ubakubetsu stream is about the same length as the Bepetsu river it joins next to the station.
