History

Takikawa Station opened on 16 July 1898 as a station of the Hokkaidō Government Railway Kamikawa Line, connecting to the Hokkaido Colliery & Railway's Sorachi Line at the simultaneously closed Sorachibuto Station. Operations were transferred to the state railway in 1905, and the Furano Line (later Nemuro Main Line) reached Takikawa from the south on 10 November 1913, making the station a junction. Successive station buildings followed in 1925, 1962 and a major 2016 seismic refurbishment, while platforms were rebuilt for barrier-free access in 2011. On 1 April 1987, ownership passed to JR Hokkaido and JR Freight at the privatisation of JNR, and Kitaca IC cards became usable on the Hakodate Main Line portion on 16 March 2024.

Notes

Takikawa marks the northern limit of regular operation for JR Hokkaido's 721, 731, 733 and 735 series electric multiple units, and is the northernmost Hakodate Main Line station still administered directly by JR Hokkaido headquarters rather than a regional branch.
