History

Isobunnai Station opened on 15 August 1929 when the Railway Ministry extended the Senmō Main Line from Shibecha to Teshikaga. The station originally handled freight in addition to passengers, with a second line, secondary line and freight platform serving the dairy district around Shibecha. With the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR Hokkaido. The freight infrastructure has since been removed, leaving a single side platform that serves bidirectional traffic on the Higashi-Kushiro–Abashiri route. In fiscal 2022 the unstaffed stop saw an average of seven passengers a day.
