History

Furano Station opened on 1 August 1900 as Shimo-Furano Station with the extension of the Hokkaidō Government Railway's Tokachi Line from Kami-Furano. The Furano Line to Asahikawa and the Kushiro Main Line (later Nemuro Main Line) eastwards were progressively brought together at the station, and on 1 April 1942 it was renamed Furano. The current station building was completed on 17 December 1974, partly motivated by Furano's role hosting a 1975 National Sports Festival winter competition. After the 1981 opening of the Sekishō Line redirected through limited expresses, the station's role narrowed to local traffic and seasonal services. JR Hokkaido and JR Freight inherited operations at the 1 April 1987 privatisation, and the Nemuro Main Line east of Furano to Shintoku was abolished on 1 April 2024, leaving Furano as a stub terminus.

Notes

Although Furano sits on Hokkaido Railway Company headquarters-administered territory, the Furano Line itself falls under the Asahikawa Branch's jurisdiction — the operational boundary runs at the home signals on the Furano Line side of the station.
