History
Nemuro Station opened on 5 August 1921 when the Ministry of Railways' Kushiro Main Line — renamed the Nemuro Main Line the same day — was extended from Nishiwada. It served as the easternmost station in Japan until December 1929, when the Nemuro Takushoku Railway pushed further onto the Nemuro Peninsula as far as Habomai. After that line closed in 1959 the title returned to Nemuro Station, but was passed in September 1961 to the newly opened Higashi-Nemuro. The current building dates from 1959. Freight ended in 1984 and parcels in 1986; JR Hokkaido inherited the station in 1987. The station has thus been Japan's easternmost three separate times — 1921 to 1929, June 1959 to September 1961, and again from 15 March 2025, when the timetable revision that abolished Higashi-Nemuro restored the title to Nemuro.

Notes
Since the 15 March 2025 timetable revision abolished neighbouring Higashi-Nemuro, Nemuro — the eastern terminus of the Nemuro Main Line (Hanasaki Line) — is once again the easternmost railway station in Japan.
