History
Shioya Station opened on 1903-06-28 as a general station when the private Hokkaido Railway extended its line from Ranshima to Otaru-Chūō (now Otaru). The line was nationalised in July 1907 and absorbed into the Hakodate Main Line in 1909. From 1912 a spur served the Hokkaido Gas (Hokkaidō Gas) Otaru plant, carrying naphtha and butane until the spur closed in 1984. Freight and parcel handling ended on 1984-02-01 and the station was unstaffed from 1984-03-31, despite a long campaign by Otaru City and local residents to retain the gas-feedstock service over safety concerns; the spur eventually closed on 1984-08-31 in favour of road tankers. JR Hokkaido inherited the station at the 1987 privatisation and rebuilt the building in 1989. Station numbers were introduced on 2007-10-01.

Notes
The 1967 Toei film 'Tabiji' is set at Shioya Station, but the on-screen station is really Horoni Station on the Iwanai Line, used as a stand-in during filming.
