History
Kami-Horomui Station was opened on 25 November 1907 by the Imperial Railway Agency as a general-purpose stop inserted between Horomui and Iwamizawa on the Hakodate Main Line. Freight handling ended on 1 October 1962 and parcel service on 2 October 1978, when the station was destaffed. JR Hokkaido took over operation at privatisation on 1 April 1987. In 1995 the original depot was replaced by an elevated bridge-type building, prompted both by the structure's age and by the widening of National Route 12 alongside the line. Staffed operation resumed under contract in 1998 before the stop was again left unattended on 1 October 2015.

Notes
The station's name simply means 'upper Horomui', reflecting its position upstream along the Ishikari River from neighbouring Horomui Station.
