History
Tōro Station opened on 15 September 1927 when the Ministry of Railways extended the Senmō Main Line from Kushiro to Shibecha, and it has been served by that line ever since. Control passed to JR Hokkaido on 1 April 1987 with the JNR privatisation. The wooden station building was rebuilt in 1953, and in 1998 its exterior was remodelled to resemble a log cabin to harmonise with the nearby Kushiro Wetlands tourist stops. The stop is unstaffed and primarily serves Lake Tōro, the Kushiro Wetlands and a small surrounding settlement; ridership has long been minimal.

Notes
The station appeared as a filming location in the 1991 Japanese feature Kojika monogatari ("Deer Friend"), and an adjoining "Mini Ezo-Deer Park" opened in July 1998 alongside the log-cabin renovation.
