History

Yurigahara Station opened on 28 June 1986 as a temporary halt on the Sasshō Line built at the City of Sapporo's expense to serve the National Urban Greening Fair held at Yurigahara Park that summer. Strong local demand and ongoing residential development persuaded JNR to keep the halt running afterwards, and it was promoted to a full station at the 1 April 1987 JNR privatisation under JR Hokkaido. The line through the station was double-tracked in March 1995, automatic fare gates were installed in July 1999, and electrified service began on 1 June 2012 when the Sapporo–Hokkaidō Iryōdaigaku section was wired up.

Notes

Despite sitting inside Sapporo city limits on a busy commuter line, Yurigahara recorded just 842 boardings per day in fiscal 2024 — the lowest of any JR Hokkaido station within the city.
