History

Nopporo Station opened as a flag stop on the Horonai Railway on 3 November 1889 and was transferred to the Hokkaido Colliery and Railway Company a month later. Nationalisation in 1906 made it a state-railway general station, and from November 1930 to April 1974 it also served as the terminus of the Yūbari Railway. JR Hokkaido inherited the station at the 1987 JNR privatisation. The current elevated station building, designed jointly with Danish State Railways under a sister-railway tie-up, opened on 23 October 2011, completing a decade-long grade-separation project that reorganised the surrounding city centre.

Notes

The north-side plaza here was the first in Hokkaidō to use geothermal heat for snow-melting road heating, drawing energy from beneath the station forecourt.
