History
Shimukappu Station opened on 1 October 1981 as a passenger-only stop on the Japanese National Railways line later combined into the Sekishō Line, roughly midway between Shin-Yūbari and Shintoku. It was built with an attached maintenance base because the surrounding mountains required a forward operating point for permanent way work. From November 1986 it became unstaffed and operations were entrusted to Shimukappu Village. JR Hokkaido inherited the station at privatisation on 1 April 1987, and the platforms were lengthened during the Sekishō and Nemuro line speed-up works of 1995-96 to handle thirteen-car limited expresses.

Notes
Because no regular local trains have ever run on the Shin-Yūbari–Shintoku section, holders of ordinary tickets are permitted to ride between Shimukappu and adjacent stations on limited-express trains without paying the express surcharge.
