History

Yakumo Station opened on 3 November 1903 when the Hokkaido Railway extended the Mori–Netsuru section. After the Hokkaido Railway was nationalised on 1 July 1907, the line was renamed the Hakodate Main Line in 1909. The first station building was rebuilt in 1915 and again in 1930 and 1969. Freight handling was discontinued on 1 February 1984 and baggage handling on 14 March 1985. The station passed to JR Hokkaido at privatisation on 1 April 1987. Following the demotion of Washinosu Station in March 2016, Yakumo became the westernmost passenger station with regular service in Hokkaido.
