History

Nanae Station opened on 1902-12-10 as an intermediate stop in the first construction phase of the private Hokkaido Railway, which laid track from Hakodate to Hongō (today Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto). The line was nationalised on 1907-07-01, and the route was renamed the Hakodate Main Line on 1909-10-12. The station was a freight handler until 1981, when freight was withdrawn on 1981-05-28 and parcel service ended on 1985-03-14. Operations transferred to JR Hokkaido on 1987-04-01. Catenary electrification through Nanae was completed on 2016-03-26 in conjunction with the Hokkaido Shinkansen extension to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, and Kitaca IC card service began on 2024-03-16.
