History

Kanita Station is a JR East station on the Tsugaru Line in the town of Sotogahama, Aomori Prefecture, located 27.0 km from the line's starting point at Aomori. It opened on 5 December 1951 as a station of the Japanese National Railways, and passed to JR East with the 1 April 1987 privatisation. From the opening of the Tsugaru Kaikyō Line on 13 March 1988 until 21 March 2016, when regular conventional passenger services to Hakodate ended (the Hokkaido Shinkansen opened five days later on 26 March), Kanita was the de facto interchange point between JR East and JR Hokkaido. Service onward to Minmaya Station was suspended in August 2022 following heavy-rainfall damage, leaving Kanita as the line's effective terminus.

Notes

JR East has reached basic agreement with local authorities to discontinue the Tsugaru Line between Shin-Nakaominato Signal Box and Minmaya on 1 April 2027, which will make Kanita the line's effective terminus.
