History

Okunai Station is a JR East station on the Tsugaru Line in the city of Aomori, located 11.5 km from the line's starting point at Aomori. It opened on 5 December 1951 as a station of the Japanese National Railways. The station became unstaffed at night from October 1961 and freight operations were withdrawn on 21 July 1968. With the privatisation of JNR on 1 April 1987, operations passed to JR East. The station building burned down in November 1999, and a new building entered service on 11 March 2000. The station has been completely unstaffed since 2001. Two opposed side platforms accommodate trains up to six cars, with shorter formations requiring a door-cut at the Aomori end.

Notes

The platforms accommodate six-car formations only by opening doors on the Minmaya-end cars; trains stopping in the Aomori direction require door-cuts on shorter formations.
