History

Aburakawa Station opened on December 5, 1951 as a Japanese National Railways stop on the Tsugaru Line in what is now Aomori City. Freight handling ended in July 1970, and on April 1, 1971 the station became a kan'i itaku (simplified-consignment) station operated by the Japan Travel Bureau. Operational control passed to JR East on April 1, 1987. The station was returned to kan'i itaku status under the Jaster Corporation on October 1, 2003, and the present building — styled after a Western-style cannery in reference to the area's sardine-canning history, with aluminium louvres on the front — entered service on June 6, 2017. The station became unattended on March 18, 2023.

Notes

The 2017 rebuild references the area's sardine-canning past: the façade is styled after a Western-look cannery, with aluminium louvres on the front meant to evoke sardines.
