History

Shimoda Station opened on 1891-12-20 as a station of the private Nippon Railway in what is now Oirase Town. Telegraph service started in March 1893, and the line was nationalised in November 1906, becoming part of the Tōhoku Main Line. Freight handling ended on 1971-10-01. The stationmaster post was abolished on 1983-02-01 and the station placed under Misawa's management; parcels and staff went the same day. From 1985 to 1993 one Limited Express Hatsukari pair called. JR East inherited the station at the 1987 privatisation. With the full opening of the Tōhoku Shinkansen on 2010-12-04, the parallel local line was transferred to Aoimori Railway, and one Rapid Shimokita pair began stopping. A ticket machine was installed on 2023-03-11, the manned counter closed on 2023-03-17, and the station was fully unstaffed from the following day.

Notes

During JNR and JR East days, tickets for Shimoda Station in Aomori were marked "(North) Shimoda" to distinguish them from the Wakayama Line's Shimoda Station in Nara Prefecture; the prefix was revived when the station was transferred to Aoimori Railway.
