History

Jūniko Station is a JR East Gonō Line stop in the town of Fukaura, Aomori Prefecture, 46.6 kilometres from the terminus at Higashi-Noshiro. It opened on 15 September 1959 as the Jūniko Signal Stop, a temporary halt serving visitors to the nearby Jūniko Lakes. At the 1 April 1987 privatisation it transferred to JR East and was promoted to a temporary station served only by the Resort Shirakami rapid; on 1 February 1988 it became a full station with regular local-train calls. The current station building, built by former Iwasaki Village to promote tourism, opened on 19 March 2005 and houses a tourist information office.
