History
Akitashirakami Station opened on October 1, 1997 in what was then the town of Hachimori (now Happō), Akita Prefecture, on the Gonō Line. The town had begun campaigning for a new station as early as 1988; its provisional name during planning was Goshonodai. The station is served by every Resort Shirakami limited-express run and consists of a single side platform along the line. From April 1, 2020, administration of the station shifted to Higashi-Noshiro Station, and it now operates as a simplified-commissioned stop with ticket sales handled by Happō town through the adjacent Akita-Shirakami Management Centre.

Notes
Until fiscal 2004, Akitashirakami held the unusual distinction of being the least-used staffed station in JR East's network.
