History

Higashi-Hachimori Station opened on 26 April 1926 as Hachimori Station (八森駅) on the Japanese Government Railways (JGR), serving the village of Hachimori in Akita Prefecture. The JGR became Japan National Railways (JNR) after World War II. The original Hachimori Station served the village centre, but when the Hachimori town hall was relocated near the present-day Hachimori Station, this station was renamed Higashi-Hachimori on 1 October 1959. The station was unattended from 1 October 1971, became a contracted-out station on 1 July 1972, and a new building opened in April 1979. With the 1 April 1987 privatisation of JNR it came under JR East. It has since become fully unstaffed and has been managed from Higashi-Noshiro since 2020.

Notes

The station's name was swapped with a neighbouring stop in 1959: Higashi-Hachimori was the original Hachimori Station, but Tsubaki Station took the Hachimori name a month later when the town hall moved.
