History

Tomai Station opened on 10 December 1962 as the Tomai Signal Stop on the Tōhoku Main Line under Japan National Railways (JNR), in what is now the city of Ninohe in Iwate Prefecture. It was upgraded to a passenger station on 1 October 1966 and was unstaffed from the start. With the 1 April 1987 privatisation of JNR it came under East Japan Railway Company (JR East), and on 1 December 2002 it transferred to the third-sector Iwate Galaxy Railway Company on the Tōhoku Shinkansen's extension to Hachinohe. The station has two opposed side platforms connected by an underground passage; there is no station building, only small shelters on each platform.
