History
Shimokawazoi Station began operation on July 25, 1950 as a provisional halt in the now-defunct village of Shimokawazoi, Akita Prefecture, with ticket sales offered from the outset. It was upgraded to a full station on May 1, 1954, on the Japan National Railways (JNR) Ōu Main Line. Baggage handling and on-site staffing ended in October 1971. With the April 1, 1987 JNR privatisation it passed to East Japan Railway Company (JR East); a converted freight-car station building introduced in February 1987 was replaced by a new structure in 2006. The unstaffed station sits 393.5 kilometres from the line's starting point at Fukushima.

A memorial stone marking the birthplace of proletarian novelist Takiji Kobayashi, who was born in the former village of Shimokawazoi, stands in the square in front of the station.
