History

Shibahira Station opened on 10 November 1923 on the privately built Akita Railway, serving the village of Shibahira in Akita Prefecture. The line was nationalised on 1 June 1934, becoming part of the JGR and later the JNR. The station has been unstaffed since 1 October 1971, and at the privatisation of JNR on 1 April 1987 it passed to JR East as a station on the Hanawa Line, 74.4 rail kilometres from the line's terminus at Kōma. It has a single side platform serving a bidirectional track and is administered remotely from the Morioka General Management Centre. The 2024 timetable revision added "Ekinet Q-ticket" ticketless service from 1 October.
