History

Rikuchu-Ube Station opened on 20 July 1975 as an unstaffed Japan National Railways stop on the Kuji Line. When the Kuji Line was privatised on 1 April 1984, the station passed to the third-sector Sanriku Railway and became part of the Kita-Rias Line. The 11 March 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami forced a system-wide suspension; service between Kuji and Rikuchu-Noda, including this stop, was restored on 16 March 2011. On 23 March 2019 the Kita-Rias, Yamada and Minami-Rias segments were merged into the through-running Rias Line, of which this station is now an intermediate stop.

Notes

The station's nickname "Jomon no Hana" (Jomon flower) refers to the Jomon-period archaeological sites that have been excavated in the surrounding area.
