History

Tofugaura-Kaigan Station opened on 25 March 2017 as a petition station funded by Noda village to serve the Maita Heights post-disaster housing development built after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake. Construction began on 3 August 2016 under the provisional name Maita Station, and the present name was formally announced on 1 November 2016 with construction costs of about JPY 150 million covered entirely by an Iwate prefectural subsidy. A seasonal temporary stop called Tofugaura had previously operated near the same spot during 1986-1994 summers and the summer of 1999. The unified Rias Line absorbed the station on 23 March 2019.

Notes

A seasonal halt called Tofugaura had stood at the same site during the summers of 1986-1994 and in the summer of 1999, three decades before the permanent station opened.
