History

The station opened on 10 November 1926 as Iwate-Matsuo Station (岩手松尾駅) on what is now the Hanawa Line, serving the village of Matsuo. Freight handling ended in November 1969 and parcel handling in February 1984. On 1 April 1987 it passed to JR East with the privatisation of JNR, and on 13 March 1988 it was renamed Matsuo-Hachimantai Station to reflect the surrounding tourism region. Following CTC control in December 1999 the station became unstaffed, and a simplified station building replaced the older structure in March 2004. The passing loop was taken out of service around September 2023, leaving one platform face in regular use.

Notes

The film "Dōhō" used the area around the pre-renovation station as a filming location, and the original building appears in the picture's final scenes.
