History

Ugo-Ushijima Station opened on 31 July 1921 as a station on the Japanese Government Railways Uetsu Hokusen line, serving the town of Ushijima in Akita Prefecture. It was incorporated into the Uetsu Main Line on 20 April 1924, and the current station building was completed in June 1944. With the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, the station passed into joint operation by JR East and JR Freight; freight services on the line were suspended after 1 April 2006. In 1991 a pedestrian underpass linking the station's east and west sides was opened. Suica IC card service began on 27 May 2023.
