History

Ōbarino Station traces back to the Funaoka Signal Stop, opened by the Japanese Government Railways on 10 November 1921 on the Ōu Main Line in what is now Akita city. It was renamed the Ōbarino Signal Stop on 25 February 1929, then closed from November 1933 until 10 October 1940. Passenger service began on 1 February 1950 with promotion to a full station. It has been unattended since 1 December 1979, passed to JR East at JNR privatisation on 1 April 1987, and received a new station building in April 2006. The Akita Shinkansen runs between the station building and the platform.

Notes

Akita Shinkansen trains pass on the track immediately beside the station building, so passengers must cross a footbridge to reach the single conventional-line platform on the far side.
