History

Kawauchi Station opened on 30 November 1933 on what is now the JR Yamada Line in Miyako, Iwate. Storm damage rendered the line impassable on 26 November 1946 and service was not restored until 21 November 1954. Freight handling was abolished on 1 January 1973 and parcel handling on 1 February 1984, and the station passed to JR East at the JNR privatisation on 1 April 1987. On 25 March 2018 the Morioka–Miyako block system changed from interlocked block to special automatic block, with track 3 going out of use and the layout becoming two side platforms serving two tracks. CTC took effect on 22 April 2018 and the station became unstaffed all day, with the Kawauchi stationmaster abolished and management transferred to Miyako Station. On 23 March 2019, after JR transferred Miyako to Sanriku Railway, Kawauchi came under the management of Morioka Station. A new station building entered service in mid-December 2020, and the Eki-net Q-Chiket service started on 1 October 2024.

Notes

To distinguish it from the Kawauchi Station read "Sendai" on the Kyushu Shinkansen and Kagoshima Main Line, tickets issued at this station are printed with the prefix "(山) 川内" — the "yama" referring to the Yamada Line. A water tower from the steam era still survives on the Morioka side of the station precinct.
