History

Namiitakaigan Station opened on 20 December 1961 as Namiita Station, an unattended Japanese National Railways stop on the Yamada Line, in what is now Ōtsuchi, Iwate Prefecture. It passed to JR East at the JNR privatisation on 1 April 1987 and was renamed Namiitakaigan on 3 December 1994. Service was suspended after the 11 March 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, which severely damaged the tracks and the surroundings. When the rebuilt Miyako–Kamaishi segment was transferred to the Sanriku Railway on 23 March 2019, Namiitakaigan reopened as an intermediate stop on the unified Rias Line, with a single side platform and a small shelter.

Notes

During JR East operation the station carried an Esperanto nickname, "Ondokrestoj" ("wave crests"), reflecting its proximity to Namiita Beach.
