History

Unosumai Station opened on 17 September 1939, originally as a station on the Yamada Line. It came under JR East operation when Japanese National Railways was privatised on 1 April 1987. The station and most of its surroundings were destroyed by the tsunami following the 11 March 2011 Tōhoku earthquake. Once the closed Miyako-Kamaishi segment of the Yamada Line had been rebuilt, operation was handed over to the third-sector Sanriku Railway on 23 March 2019, joining what had been the Kita-Rias and Minami-Rias Lines into the unified Rias Line. Unosumai now functions as an intermediate stop on this through line, with a single island platform connected by an underground passage.
