History
Senmaya Station opened on 1927-07-15 as the temporary terminus of the Ōfunato Line in what is now Ichinoseki, Iwate Prefecture, and held that role until the line was extended in September 1928. The original layout offered five tracks for freight loading, marshalling and through trains, with an in-station shop selling alcohol, miscellaneous goods, Japanese and Western paper, and tobacco — tobacco was the main industry of Senmaya at the time. The station building was rebuilt in September 1970, freight handling ended on 1972-01-01 and parcel handling on 1985-03-14. JR East took over at the 1987-04-01 JNR privatisation, and operations were contracted out from 1999. The Midori no Madoguchi ticket office closed on 2024-03-15, and the station became unattended the following day.
