History

Higashi-Sakata Station began life on 1944-03-31 as the Higashi-Sakata Signal on the Uetsu Main Line in what is now Sakata, Yamagata Prefecture. It was promoted to a full passenger station on 1958-12-25, with a concrete-block single-storey building put up at the same time. Parcel handling ended and the station became unattended on 1972-09-01. It transferred to JR East at the 1987-04-01 privatisation of the Japanese National Railways. The 2019 Yamagata earthquake damaged the platforms, and the suspension of Rikuu West Line through services on 2022-05-14 affected stopping patterns until services resumed on 2026-01-16. The station sits among paddy fields and has very few daily users.
