History
Amarume Station opened on 1914-09-20 as the temporary terminus of the state-run Sakata Line, extended from Karikawa, in what is now Shōnai, Yamagata Prefecture. The line reached Sakata three months later, making Amarume a through station, and from 1918 it became the junction of the Uetsu Main Line and the Rikuu West Line. The current station building entered service on 1964-12-22, with footbridge rebuilding completed in March 1965. On 1978-10-02 it began to receive Limited Express "Inaho" trains. JR East took over at the 1987-04-01 privatisation, and operations were contracted out from 2003-04-01. Rikuu West Line through trains were suspended on 2022-05-14 for tunnel construction and resumed on 2026-01-16.

Notes
Platform 4 was used as a location in the 2008 film Departures (Okuribito); a sticker once marked the spot where the character Mika (played by Ryōko Hirosue) stood, though it has since been removed.
