History
Fujishima Station opened on 1918-09-21 as a station on the Rikuu West Line in what is now Tsuruoka, Yamagata Prefecture. It was reassigned to the Uetsu Main Line on 1924-07-31. A station-front shop opened on 1925-04-10, and a footbridge was completed in January 1934. Freight handling ended on 1972-09-01; the station became contract-managed on 1981-04-01 and a staff-less simple consignment on 1985-03-14. It transferred to JR East at the 1987-04-01 privatisation. From April 2016 the station building was rebuilt on the same footprint after operating from a temporary prefab beside it; the replacement entered service on 2016-10-15.
