History
The station opened on 18 March 1923 as Atsumi Station (温海駅) on the Rikuu West Line in what is now Tsuruoka, Yamagata. It became part of the Uetsu Line on 31 July 1924 and the Uetsu Main Line on 20 November 1925. A new building, financed by municipal bonds from the town of Atsumi, was completed in December 1963, and freight handling ceased that year. The station was renamed Atsumi Onsen on 1 October 1977. With the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 it passed to the East Japan Railway Company (JR East); the building was renovated in 2013 and again in 2017 for TRAIN SUITE Shiki-shima service.
