History
Koiwagawa Station opened on 11 December 1944 as Koiwagawa Signal Box of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, and was upgraded to a station on 1 February 1950. Parcel handling ended on 1 September 1972, when the station became unattended. With the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 it was absorbed into the East Japan Railway Company (JR East) network. A landslide between Koiwagawa and Atsumi Onsen on 13 July 2006 cut the Nezugaseki-Atsumi Onsen section until 9 August. The station building was rebuilt in December 2018. The 2019 Yamagata earthquake on 18 June damaged the platform and tilted poles.
