History
Furukawa Station opened on 20 April 1913 as a station on the Rikuu Line (today's Rikuu East Line), running between Kogota and Iwadeyama. On 11 June 1915 it was renamed Rikuzen-Furukawa Station to avoid confusion with Koga Station on the Tōhoku Main Line. After Furukawa was chosen as the local Tōhoku Shinkansen stop in 1971, a new station building was built about 300 m east of the original site; revenue service from the new location began on 1 November 1980, when the original name was restored. Tōhoku Shinkansen services started on 23 June 1982. The station was transferred to JR East upon the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987.
